Kamuiwakka Hot spring Falls

Located in a lesser-known region of the World Natural Heritage Site of Shiretoko, the Kamuiwakka river is heated by natural hot spring water.

The Shiretoko area was designated a World Natural Heritage Site in 2005. Enjoy the natural land of Shiretoko to your hearts content at Kamuiwakka Hot spring Falls, considered to be one of the “8 picturesque sights” of Shiretoko. Hot spring water flows from Mount Iou in the center of the Shiretoko Peninsula, creating this unusual hot spring river.

It is easy to slip around the waterfall, so be sure to wear strong shoes and clothes that you don’t mind getting wet! The area’s open season lasts from the start of June to the start of November. There is a free shuttle bus to and from the area available for use at times when traffic to the area is restricted.

It is possible to bathe in the pool at the base of the waterfall, however the temperature of the water is fairly low, never rising much above 30 degrees. Given the high acidity of the water which flows from the sulphurous Mount Io, those who are brave enough to take a dip would be well advised to proceed with caution!

At  its  peak season, the area is bustling with sightseers. Shiretoko is also home to many Ezo deer, which you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of!
